Do we really need more recipes for beef stew, polenta, and ratatouille? If they're the work of famed restaurateur and "food activist" Alice Waters, undoubtedly. In The Art of Simple Food, Waters offers 200-plus recipes for these and other simple but savory dishes, like Spicy Cauliflower Soup, Fava Bean Purée, and Braised Chicken Legs, as well as dessert formulas for the likes of Nectarine and Blueberry Crisp and Tangerine Ice. In addition, readers learn (or become reacquainted with) the Waters mantra: eat locally and sustainably; eat seasonally; shop at farmers markets. These are the rules by which she approaches food and cooking, and hopes we will too. Organized largely by techniques, the book is a kind of primer, designed to free readers from recipe reliance.

Some readers may look askance at advice that they search out sources for locally produced food, for example, given the everyday exigencies of shopping and getting meals on the table. Yet it is precisely the need to "remake" our relationship to food that, Waters contends, determines the ultimate success of all our cooking and dining, not to mention our health and that of the planet. This relatively small book has a large message, and good everyday recipes to back it up. --Arthur Boehm

Art of Simple Food - glasgal -
The title, the art of keeping it simple intrigued me. Back to basics, no fussing, good healthy food. And the author was of highest reputation.
I was not disappointed as I scanned through the contents and read bits from chapters that caught my eye. Good ideas almost made me jump up and empty my kitchen cupboards of unnecessary gadgets and start over, but I resisted and read further and found that I could integrate a few of my treasures into a new format.
Life is so fast these days. This book is an island of calm informative suggestions on how to feed your family and friends healthy, superb food.
Thanks Alice, for taking the time to write this great book.

Best gluten/dairy free cookbook out there! - erin -
Going dairy and gluten free was really hard for me to do. I am not the type that wants to give it up and I felt clueless doing so. I got this cookbook and its downright amazing. Every single thing is wonderful in it. My husband is a dairy, meat, and gluten type of guy. He said and I quote "dont take this the wrong way, but since getting that cookbook your meals are soooo good." He also said you would never know you are eating dairy and gluten free. Our friends come over and they have no idea that everything is gluten free. Silvana's flour acts just like wheat all purpose flour.
This cookbook was a lifesaver. If you know anyone going gluten or dairy free, I highly recommend this book. It makes you feel like you can eat the same food as everyone else.

Good starter book, but not likely to convert tradional chefs - Suzi Hough - San Jose, CA United States
I liked that this book introduced me to new ideas about the microwave. I honestly never thought about using it to cook fish or make rice; as far as I was concerned microwaves re-heat and that's about it. I am glad that the book at least opened my horizons, so if I'm stuck in a situation where all I have is a microwave, I can whip up something more interesting than prepackaged frozen dinners.

The book has a lot of information about microwaves in general, including their history and things to watch for when deciding what size will be best for your needs.

From the recipes I tried, I am not convinced that microwave cooking is any better - or even on the same level - as the more traditional methods of cooking. Often, the recipes didn't seem to save much time, and they were rather bland...but that's good, in a way. It keeps your options open for customizing flavor to your individual tastes. I was a little disappointed that there weren't photos for the many recipes, but a lot of them are so basic you don't really need to see how the food looks.

I think this is a great book for new chefs or students who don't have access to great kitchen facilities, but experienced cooks who enjoy traditional food preparation will not be impressed.

Great Big Book Full of Great Recipes - Darena Dorsey - The South, USA
I was so excited when I received this cookbook. I have a few other soup cookbooks but they each feature about 100 recipes. This one has a whopping 375 recipes. The book is a nice, large, hardback. It doesn't have glossy pages or pictures of the food but I will swap that for the shear volume of recipes included in this book.

The book features recipes starting with soup mixes which I've always kind of used soup mixes when I made homemade soup anyway, they add alot of flavor but this book uses soup mixes to make all kinds of recipes. That was something that I didn't realize when I purchased the book. Who knew that you could make cheesecake with Campbell's Soup? The vegetable and bread recipes are just as delicious as the soup recipes in the book.

    Great book. Highly recommend.

Great Book - GF Veg Head - Boston MA
This is a great book! I was recently diagnosed with Sprue & freaking out because I had no idea what to eat! After a little research, I felt better about knowing which ingredients to eat but had NO IDEA about what to make. This cookbook has tons of ideas! Not too much info/lists of specific foods/ingredients that could have gluten, but lots of great tasting gluten free recipes! My fav is the Southwestern Style Corn Chowder (very sweet) & Taco Soup. She doesn't use tofu as much as I thought she would, but overall a really great resource. I def recommend this book!! It's well worth the money!
