Well worth it! - C. MCKENNEY - Boston, MA
This is an awesome slow-cooker cookbook! I'm not a big slow-cooker fan because the food always seems mushy and bland. This book has a lot of GREAT recipes, very flavorful, but not so weird that my family would be turned off. I borrowed this from my local library and will now buy it -- it's worth it! P.S. Try the Chicken Italiano -- very easy and very tasty!

Good starter book, but not likely to convert tradional chefs - Suzi Hough - San Jose, CA United States
I liked that this book introduced me to new ideas about the microwave. I honestly never thought about using it to cook fish or make rice; as far as I was concerned microwaves re-heat and that's about it. I am glad that the book at least opened my horizons, so if I'm stuck in a situation where all I have is a microwave, I can whip up something more interesting than prepackaged frozen dinners.

The book has a lot of information about microwaves in general, including their history and things to watch for when deciding what size will be best for your needs.

From the recipes I tried, I am not convinced that microwave cooking is any better - or even on the same level - as the more traditional methods of cooking. Often, the recipes didn't seem to save much time, and they were rather bland...but that's good, in a way. It keeps your options open for customizing flavor to your individual tastes. I was a little disappointed that there weren't photos for the many recipes, but a lot of them are so basic you don't really need to see how the food looks.

I think this is a great book for new chefs or students who don't have access to great kitchen facilities, but experienced cooks who enjoy traditional food preparation will not be impressed.

The mechanics of cooking

Even the simple task of us freezing a vegetable is not the first time you try. Let's take a look at some of theseProcedure:

Mix

The mixing process consists of two or more ingredients in a mixing bowl or pan with the sample with a spoon or a fork. A fork can sometimes be a mixture lighter than a spoon, which is more likely to crush the ingredients.

Crockpot Cooking Safety Tips

I never had a bad experience with my crockpot (and I'm sure will not), is on the security measures you have to follow some, but to ensure the safety of food. Some of them are quite simple and common sense, and you probably already do. But it never hurts to go over and just continue to recognize the importance of food handling and preparation techniques.

I always start clean, a clean kitchen, clean utensils, a clean workplace. EWash hands before and during food preparation.

Carefully check the ingredients safe. Since slow cookers can take a little 'for the bacteria at temperatures hot enough to kill, it is essential to allow the ingredients constantly refrigerated prior to food preparation. Keep in mind that the bacteria multiply faster than food at room temperature. They should therefore remain the perishable food in the refrigerator until needed.

Thaw your meat and poultry Before putting in your slow cooker. This helps correct crockpot cooking temperature quickly, so the possibility that the growth of bacteria on your food.

food cut into small pieces helps to ensure that food is cooked thoroughly. For example, do not cook large cuts of meat like a whole chicken in slow cooker. This increases the chance for bacterial growth, because it takes a little 'time to obtain a correct > Cooking temperature. Meat and vegetables can be cut in advance, but make sure you save them separately in covered containers.

Keep the lid. Experts say removing the cover at the same time can add 20 minutes to cook! This is because it takes so long to re-generate heat and steam loss. Take only able to stir the cooking of food or check.

Since vegetables cook slower than meat, vegetables on the ground. Then add meat and cover the> Food with the broth, salsa, or water.

If possible, set the slow cooker to high setting for the first hour of cooking to fast food to heat. Then it is set low for the rest of the day. If it is not possible, the Food Safety and Inspection Service says it's time to cook food safely at the bottom for all, as temperatures remain warm enough to prevent enough food for a long time that bacterial growth.

They areremoved during the entire slow-cooking and you there was a power not to take any risk. Throw the food. Although it may seem that could be dangerous for consumption. You can tell if flashing to a voltage drop for the moment on other devices such as microwave ovens, or VCR.

When a power failure at home, around the other way gas cookers, etc.

A food thermometer can be used to test "Degree of cooking" in your meat and poultry to ensure they reach a safe internal temperature:
Poultry - 170 degrees for chicken breasts - 180 degrees for chicken legs
Chopped-160 degrees
Roast -145 degrees (medium rare) -160 degrees (medium) -170 degrees (well done)

Casseroles -165 degrees
Filling - 165 degrees
Soups - 165 degrees

And when it comes to waste, be sure to cool down for over two hours> The end of cooking. Store in shallow covered containers.

It is not advisable to use a Dutch oven to warm up these groups again.

Seems to work for weight loss; maintenance may be another story - Steven A. Peterson - Hershey, PA (Born in Kewanee, IL)
I tried the Atkins' diet once and lost twenty pounds--and promptly gained half of that back. Good for weight loss. Not so sure about maintenance. I saw a lot of friends try it and lose a lot of weight and then some time later, most of them were status quo ante. . . . Still, this volume provides a good set of Atkins' recipes and is a fine resource if one wishes to try the diet. . . .

The Preface to the 2004 edition notes that the Atkins' diet had, in essence, gone "mainstream." It also noted Dr. Robert Atkins' passing in 2003. A central part of this diet is the low carbohydrate dictum. Helpful to any reader will be the listing of acceptable foods at the end of the volume (pages 209-215).

Since this is a cookbook, though, the key question is how good the recipes are. Let's take a look at a sampling of recipes and get a sense of what is at stake here. First, an example of an Atkins' diet soup, French Onion Soup Gratinee (I love a messy French onion soup!). Ingredients: olive oil, onions, reduced sodium chicken broth, dry sherry, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper, and Swiss cheese grated. Begin by browning onions in olive oil; stir on chicken broth, sherry, Worcestershire sauce, and bouillon cube. Bring to boil and then reduce to simmer. Add parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper and simmer a bit longer. Move to ovenproof serving bowls, put Swiss cheese on top and broil until cheese is brown and melted. This differs from the standard recipe that I use, but it is doable.

One example of a nice easy salad recipe is Greek Salad. Mix together vinegar, salt, and pepper as dressing. Add tomatoes (cut up), cucumbers, feta cheese, onion, olives, and toss well. Top with the dressing and enjoy!

A protein source? Scallops Meuniere. Heat olive oil until hot--but not smoking. Add scallops until they're golden brown. Transfer browned scallops to a dish to be kept warm. Then, add butter to the pan. Stir in lemon juice, dry white wine, parsley and shake the pan. Then, season with salt and pepper. Pour sauce over scallops and eat the dish.

And so on. Again, for the most part, the recipes are quite doable. I have tried a handful and found the recipes to produce good tasting food. I have not yet committed to returning to the Atkins' diet--but I will take advantage of this volume as a cookbook, whatever the case!

It seems an excellent resource. I bought this book for my friend, who is something of a food critic, and it was well received. We have not yet found a spice that isnt in this book. Just the other day I found some spice I was looking for and said it saved me lots of time. I am really enjoying reading through the book and finding out about everything that is worth, and I really like the photos of the spices as well. Really good pictures.
